Calling all Christmas Angels

As we all start thinking about Christmas holidays, gifts and celebrations with family, please take a moment to consider our local young people who will struggle with some tough times over the “Festive Season”.

Our charity partners, RADFLY (Realise A Difference For Local Youth) are working hard to support local youths to reach their potential and feel that their community values them.  They do this by supporting local charities YHES House and Ohana for Youth.

A small contribution to make our young people’s lives better

Over Christmas and New Year many young people on the Gold Coast will be at risk, they will feel distraught or lonely and even face homelessness. YHES House in Southport provides 12 to 25 year olds with a safe and youth-friendly community hub where they can access support, counselling, education and advice and even a safe place to wash their clothes and have a shower.

These young people mostly want to remain at school, get a job and contribute to the community in a positive way.  They are just facing some tough times; perhaps they are victims of violence or drug abuse, have become young parents, are experiencing relationship breakdowns, have questions about sex or sexuality.  They might just need a non-judgemental and safe place to get back on track, as well as support and tools to help them feel valued.

Please help us put together a relief fund to assist with purchasing a number of needed items that have been highlighted over the years as being of great assistance to young people at this time of year.

These funds will help to:

  • cover cost of applying for birth certificates – many young people do not have them, and it is a critical piece of ID for them to move into independence
  • purchase food vouchers
  • provide medical assistance
  • buy school resources – i.e. school uniforms
  • access mobile phones when and if needed
  • PrepL online registration
  • Emergency baby formula, nappies etc

The good work done so far – The RADFLY & Women of Influence Laptop Program

With COVID-19 there has been an emergent need for laptops; Women of Influence worked with RADFLY to provide new and refurbished laptops to YHES House so young people can continue their learning even if they don’t have the means to access a suitable device.

We purchased 10 new laptops which were provided to YHES House in May, then in October our platinum sponsors Element Business Solutions who donated 5 fully refurbished laptops and in December we will donate 2 more brand new laptops from Pogo IT Solutions.
